For just a bit of history … In the early 1960s, Pope John XXIII asked religious congregations to consider sending members to Latin America. Archbishop Romolo Carboni, papal nuncio to Peru, sent a specific invitation for communities to consider Peru. In October 1961, Sister Eucharista Galvin, superior general of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet at the time, along with her assistant, Sister M. Caroline, visited the beautiful country and decided to send nine Sisters of St. Joseph to Ica, Chimbote and Arequipa in January 1962. In March of the same year, five more Sisters were sent to serve at the Hospital Militar Central in Lima. Thus did the ministry of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet begin in Peru.
Today, our Vice Province of Peru is the largest growing unit of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet!
In August 2011, the Sisters in Peru, began the celebration of 50 years of presence to God’s people in Peru and will culminate the celebration with a weekend celebration August 3-5, 2011.
