Sister Patricia St. John, CSJ, Ph.D. Is Selected for International Board

While Sister Patricia St. John was in Corfu, Greece, in this month (July 2012) at the Early Childhood Music Education Seminar and then the World Conference for the International Society for Music Education in Thessaloniki, she was unanimously selected to serve a six-year term as Commissioner on the Early Childhood Music Education Commission.

The International Society for Music Education is comprised of seven commissions (in areas such as Professional Musicianship, Community Music, Music Research, Music Policy, Music in Schools, Music in Special Education). These seven commissions meet prior to the biennial World Conference which this year totaled over 1,000 participants from all over the world.

The Early Childhood Music Commission is comprised of six international members. Sister Patricia will serve with colleagues from Kenya, Singapore, Australia, the Netherlands, and one other U.S. commissioner from Penn State. The next conference is in Brazil in 2014!

Says Sister Patricia: "I am humbled and honored to accept this invitation from the ISME Board. Music is essential to well-being; it humanizes us and brings people together. In my multiple musical communities, I believe that I have been able to operationalize our CSJ charism, uniting neighbor with neighbor and neighbor with God through music. This appointment affirms that work and I see such great opportunity to grow in understanding of and appreciation for other peoples and their musical expression, and to work to affirm and empower that artistry. I am delighted to work with colleagues from around the world to ensure that every child grows up with music and has access to music education, which is the mission of the Early Childhood Music Education Commission. As a commissioner for this world community and in light of our CSJ charism, the neighborhood just got bigger!"

Congratulations, Sister Patricia! It is, indeed, a wonderful honor and opportunity to be selected to this prestigious position.

(Sister Patricia, a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet since 1983, is founder and executive director of Carondelet Music Center in Latham, NY; music director at Mater Christi Parish in Albany, NY; and adjunct professor at Columbia University.)
