Prayer in Times of Suffering
Friday, March 7, 2014, 7:00-9:00 p.m.
The Scriptures and human experience attest that it is often the experience of suffering that drives people to prayer. At the same time, the encounter with personal or communal suffering can make it difficult for people of faith to know how to pray. In this presentation, we will explore resources in the Judeo-Christian tradition that can help us in our prayer during times of pain and loss.
God and Human Suffering: An Ongoing Theological Conversation
Saturday, March 8, 2014, 9:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
People of faith have grappled with the mystery of human suffering throughout history. Experiences of personal and communal suffering have served as the catalyst for a vigorous conversation about how to think about God and God's relation to suffering people. This conversation is evident in the Hebrew and Christian Scriptures, the work of great theologians, and the spiritual tradition of the Church. In our time together, we will explore this conversation, as it appears in our tradition and continues today. We will reflect on our own personal theologies of God and suffering and allow them to interact with this vital tradition. This study day, which includes input and time for reflection and conversation with our presenter, will be beneficial for anyone interested in understanding God and suffering in a deeper way.
