Province Celebrates CSJ Days: Prayer, Reflection, Planning, Fun!

From August 17-20, we Sisters of St. Joseph in the Albany NY Province, celebrated CSJ Days at St. Joseph's Provincial House, a three-day gathering of our Sisters and CSJ Associates. The theme this year was “Together toward a Future Full of Hope.”

On Day 1, the opening prayer and Eucharistic Liturgy, the welcome by Province Director Sister Mary Anne Heenan and the first presentation by Keynote Speaker Sister Carol Zinn (Philadelphia) called us to be hopeful and faithful “as we take a long, loving look at what is and what could be” in our discerning of God’s plan for us! We know the future is beyond our sight and calls for increasing interdependence, communion and integration, and we also know God is calling us to be open in a contemplative consciousness and to allow the future to come to us. “All it will cost us is EVERYTHING!” as Sister Carol reminded us. We discussed such questions as: What is the activity of God within us for mission? In everything, are we choosing to create unity? Are we living an outpouring life for others? Are we living the interior life of Mary in being faithful? Do I have the inner heart of Joseph? And wonderfully in our time together, we know there is NOTHING beyond God’s grace.

On our second day after Eucharistic Liturgy and morning prayer, we received an update from Sisters Kay Ryan and Lauren Van Dermark regarding Shaker Pointe at Carondelet, Inc. , our senior independent-living community, and heard a presentation by Kate Sheehan, the Community Engagement Manager for Heifer International Northeast U. S. Region. We had decided previously to make a donation to Heifer International, Inc. at CSJ Days, and Kate and her husband, Peter, traveled to Latham to accept the donation. We were delighted to hear Kate speak so enthusiastically about the life-changing impact of Heifer’s sustainable community development. In the afternoon, Presenter Sister Carol Zinn spoke about apostolic religious life in today’s global community and the ongoing witness of our mission and charism. We reflected on three questions: Who are we called to be at this moment in time? How are we called to live our life fully and well? What will be the expression of our mission and charism in the future?

On the last of our CSJ Days, we celebrated prayer and Eucharistic Liturgy, joined by our beloved friend, Bishop Emeritus Howard J. Hubbard. After receiving Eucharist, five of our Sisters (Maria Joseph Cokely, Catherine Crispo, Rita Shawn McClaskey, Anne Tranelli and Lauren Van Dermark) received Centennial Medallions from Bishop Emeritus Howard J. Hubbard in honor of their service to Catholic Charities over the years. In addition, the Province Leadership Team shared our strategic plan, and each of us received a copy within the context of prayer. Our three days, focused on the theme, “Together toward a Future Full of Hope” have energized us, indeed, for our mission and charism! God has blessed us with this time together, and we are so very grateful!
