“[Albany Province] CSJA Commitment Day – June 12, 2021, is a full day and long-awaited! …Remember that we have been Called together for the Life of the World.”

So started the invitation that Albany Province CSJ Associates had been waiting to receive for more than a year. With an incredible amount of love, labor and time that the Associate Commitment Planning Committee had poured into this wonderful occasion, sisters and associates from our six regional groups gathered—some in groups and some from the comfort of their own homes—all via Zoom.

The majority of our time together was captivated by Mary McGlone, CSJ, as she presented the results of her expansive research into the early history of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, which we then discussed in small groups. We were delighted to learn at the end of Sister Mary’s presentation that she will be with us at our next Commitment Weekend in June 2022 to share with us the content of her second book on our CSJ history! We sincerely hope that we will be able to gather in person next June along with the sisters from each area and those who live at the Provincial House in Latham, which we associates consider our “Home away from Home” along with and among the sisters.

Probably the most cherished part of the day for veteran associates is the remembrance of those sisters and associates who have gone home to heaven. The traditional lighting of a candle for each dearly departed—usually done in the Provincial House Chapel—was done in each region over Zoom. One associate lit the area’s candle, and another read the names of the deceased.

This was followed by both our annual recommitment by current associates and by a reaffirming statement from the sisters present via Zoom. This ritual, in turn, was followed by the first commitment ritual for our newest Albany Associate, Catherine “Katie” Guevara. Katie was part of a group of inquirers from The College of Saint Rose, an Albany Province institution. She made her first commitment in the presence of Sister Marilyn Vassallo, CSJ, former Albany CSJ associate team member and still one of our biggest advocates.

Our day ended with closing statements and “thank yous” from our current Albany associate director and Zoom maestro extraordinaire Patricia “Pat” Pilon, CSJA, followed by our much-beloved parting song, “We are Companions on the Journey.”
